LAVA-ROID #1
Viva La Flarb Comics

With a tongue firmly planted in its cheek, Kevin Conn & Stephen Lindsay’s book doesn’t pull its punches when it comes to bringing the funny as well as coming up with creative characters such as Pillowfighter (he had his fists replaced with pillows in a freak accident), Heimlich the Nazi Bear (self explanatory), and my favorite, The Dad (who uses hypnosis to berate and lower the self esteem of his opponents). Sure, the characters here aren’t really developed past their inventively funny nom de plumes, but there’s a nice creative spirit to this comic. Lighthearted, but humor with enough bite to keep things interesting. Artist Leanne Hannah does a great job of making all of these goofy characters battle one another with a lot of pop. Her style is reminiscent of Phil Hester, John McCrea, and Joe Staton. This book is a preview of a live webcomic which is coming soon to an URL near you and can be found here. I’ll definitely be checking out the developments of Kevin Conn’s live action series on the web, but with the quality of this book, I’m hoping to see for fiery @$$-ed adventures of LAVA-ROID in print too.

Review by Russell Burlingame

Lava-Roid #1, from Viva la Flarb Comics, will be hitting IndyPlanet.com and comic shops in the Northeast U.S. this week. Its creator, Kevin Conn, describes the book as “a cross between ‘The Tick’ and ‘South Park’,” which isn’t totally inaccurate. Co-written by Stephen Lindsay (“Jesus Hates Zombies”) and drawn by Leanne Hannah, this book seems like what a full issue of DC’s Human Flame character might have been like, if he had turned good back before “Final Crisis” established him as more character than punchline. A chubby dude with a goatee who has fire powers and uses them to fight for justice...just not very well. But that’s alright, because the twits he finds himself facing are even less competent than he is; I guess that’s where you can draw a big line of differentiation between Lava-Roid and The Tick, whose victories always seemed to be fueled by dumb luck, since all his villains were way smarter than him.

The cartoonish art style suits the book well, and it’s got more polish than a lot of small press books, making it feel like it could compete in a comic shop market. The artist also clearly knows the perfect level of ridiculousness with which to depict some of the goofy characters contained herein, showcasing “The Villainous Destructors” as a group of middle-aged guys (and a bear) whose powers and weaknesses would have them at home in the pages of Garth Ennis’s “Hitman” comics.

The issue, based on a webseries that Conn wrote and stars in, feels like the start to a miniseries but is, by its own admission, kind of an experiment. “Will the adventure continue?” asks a narration box where you would customarily talk about the next issue, and then directs you to the Lava-Roid website for more information. Presumably the stories will keep coming if Conn makes enough money off the comic to pay his artists and not have to hock that awesome Lava-Roid suit. I kinda hope he does—there’s nothing groundbreaking here, but it’s a fun, funny book and right now superhero comics outside of the big two are getting so good (see things like The Life and Times of Savior 28 and Irredeemable) that they’re no longer guaranteed to be afterthoughts.

From I-Mockery.com:

The Lava-Roid comic was GREAT! Lotta fantastic one-liners ("Roar Hitler!") and crazy characters that reminded me of something I'd read in The Tick. So yeah, a fine first issue if I've ever seen one! Any superhero who uses hemorrhoid flare-ups as a weapon is aok in my book! And speaking of the book itself, Leanne did a great job on the artwork , kudos to her for bringing the characters to life in comic form! Definitely wouldn't mind buying a copy of it to read again once 'n a while!

LAVA-BLOG 1: The story, the posters, the comic book

From the guy who brought you "Unemployed Skeletor" comes...LAVA-ROID

Phillip Manchester was just a normal cop until his big twin brother was murdered in cold blood by a crime lord named Ruggard & his transsexual mistress Ms. Pantalara. They wanted to close his Community Center where all the local kids went to break dance. Depressed and angry he did what any one of us would do---ask his best friend/ex-ninja/scientist to inject him with his untested super serum. But what Phillip forgot to mention was that he was suffering from a bad case of hemorrhoids. The serum fused with them, causing his skin to become rock hard, aka bulletproof. And gave Phillip the ability to shoot fire out of his hands and arse. Then with some gift cards from Jo-Ann Fabrics, he makes a costume to become the vigilante known as LAVA-ROID
Now with the power of fire, he hunts down those who murdered his brother and fights to keep the Community Center open so that the unfortunate few can "Pop N' Lock" once more.
In this world, only one rule exists: kick their ass.....with fire.
